This happens when you’re planning into an area with no mapped route: in Hike mode the planner snaps your new point back to the nearest known path, which can land it almost on top of your previous point. The fix is to switch the Routing option to Line mode for that section (draw straight lines through it), then switch back to Hike mode afterwards.
