How do I lock National+ maps to the 1:50k scale?

By default, National+ switches from the 1:50,000 series to the more detailed 1:25,000 mapping as you zoom in. If you’d rather stay on the familiar 1:50k sheet the whole way in — handy when you’re navigating alongside a paper map, or you just prefer how it reads — you can lock the scale.

A few things worth knowing before you start: the lock only applies to National+ (it’s the only collection with a second scale to switch to), it’s off by default, and it’s remembered per device. Turning it on in the app doesn’t change the website, and vice versa.

In the app (iOS and Android)

  1. Open any map page and tap the Maps button.
  2. Tap the info (i) icon next to National+.
  3. Tap Customise map.
  4. Turn on Lock to 1-50k scale.

You’ll only find the Customise map option on National+ — it isn’t shown on Hiking+, Historical+ or the other styles. Once the lock is on, a small 1-50k badge appears on the National+ tile in the map picker, so you can tell at a glance that it’s active.

On the HiiKER website

  1. Open any map at https://hiiker.app and click the Maps button.
  2. Click More.
  3. Click Map settings.
  4. Turn on Lock to 1:50k scale.

Just like the app, the row only appears while National+ is your selected map style, and the National+ card picks up a 1:50k badge while the lock is on. The website stores this in your browser, so you’ll need to set it again if you switch browser or computer. If you ever want to clear it along with your other map settings, there’s a Reset to default button at the bottom of the same Map settings panel.

Switching the lock back off returns National+ to its normal behaviour, with the finer 1:25,000 mapping appearing again as you zoom in.

National+ is part of HiiKER PRO+ — see What’s the difference between Pro and PRO+? for what else is included.
