Two likely causes: the location marker can be hidden in the map settings (tap the settings icon in the map info bar, scroll down, and toggle the marker back on — it’s easy to switch off by accident, and handy on purpose for practising navigation skills), or you’ve single-tapped the map, which hides the on-screen buttons — tap once more to bring them back.
