Customising your recording settings

At HiiKER, we want to make sure your hiking experience is accurately recorded, no matter which device you use. We understand that some devices may not always record your hikes perfectly due to differences in hardware and software. To help improve your recording experience, we offer customisable settings that allow you to fine-tune how your location data is collected during a hike.

Below, we explain each of these settings and why you might want to change them:

1. Recording Location Interval

This setting changes how often your location is saved while you’re hiking.

  • Shorter Interval: Saves your location more frequently, which means your hike recording will be more precise. However, it will use more battery.
  • Longer Interval: Saves your location less frequently, which conserves battery life but may result in less accurate recordings.

Tip: If you’re on a long hike and want to save battery, consider using a longer interval. For shorter hikes or when accuracy is crucial, go for a shorter interval.

2. Minimum Recording Interval

This setting adjusts the minimum time between each location save, based on a fraction of the location interval.

  • Lower Minimum Value: Can increase the accuracy of your recordings but will use more battery.
  • Higher Minimum Value: Uses less battery but might reduce accuracy.

Tip: If you’re finding that your hikes are not recorded accurately, lowering this setting may help. However, remember that it will use more battery.

3. Recording Location Accuracy

This setting controls the accuracy threshold for the location data that is saved.

  • Lower Value: Only the most accurate location data is saved, resulting in fewer but more precise location points. This might mean that fewer locations are picked up, especially in areas with poor GPS signal.
  • Higher Value: Allows for less accurate location data to be saved, which may result in more points being recorded, but some of them may be slightly off.

Tip: If you’re in an area with a strong GPS signal and want the most accurate hike data, choose a lower value. If you’re in a more challenging area for GPS (like deep forests or canyons), a higher value may result in more consistent data.

4. Recording Location Service

This setting allows you to choose which location service your device uses for recording your hike:

  • Fused Location: This service uses a combination of GPS, Wi-Fi, and cellular data to estimate your location. It is easier on your battery but may not be as accurate.
  • Location Manager: This service relies more on GPS data, which is usually more accurate but can consume more battery.

Tip: If your battery life is a priority, use the Fused Location service. If you’re looking for the most accurate data and are okay with using a bit more battery, use the Location Manager.

Important Warning About Changing Settings

Caution: Changing these settings may affect how well your device records your hike. Only adjust these settings if you feel confident in your understanding of them or if a HiiKER team member has advised you to do so. The wrong settings may lead to inaccurate recordings of your hike.

Why Are We Offering These Settings?

Different Android devices handle location tracking in various ways. These settings give you control over your recording experience, allowing you to adapt based on your device’s capabilities and your personal needs. By adjusting these settings, you can achieve the best possible results from your hike recordings, whether you’re looking to save battery life or improve the accuracy of your hike data.

We hope these options help you have a better hiking experience! If you have any questions or need further guidance, feel free to reach out to the HiiKER support team.
