Waypoints let you mark custom locations on your HiiKER maps — a meeting place, a camp spot, a parking area, a summit. They’re stored on your account and available offline while you hike.
Adding a waypoint
From the Waypoints menu: on any map page, tap Options > Waypoints > Add new waypoint. This drops a waypoint at the crosshair in the centre of the map.
By long-pressing the map: press and hold anywhere on the map to drop a temporary marker at that exact point, then choose Save as Waypoint.
The long-press marker
Long-pressing the map drops a temporary marker you don’t have to save. It’s the quickest way to ask “what’s here?” — the marker menu gives you:
- Save as Waypoint — keep it permanently
- Copy Coordinate — grab the coordinates of that exact spot
- Plan Route to Pin — route there from where you are
- Street View
- Set Compass Bearing
- Clear Marker — remove it; nothing is saved
What you can do with a saved waypoint
Tap a waypoint icon on the map to open its options:
- Driving Directions — opens Google Maps or Apple Maps and navigates you to it. Handy for getting to a trailhead or car park.
- Plan trail to this Waypoint — plots the best known walking route from where you are.
- Edit Details — name, description, icon type, photos, privacy, and which group it belongs to.
- Share Waypoint
- Delete Waypoint
💡 A waypoint can’t be dragged to a new position — to move one, delete it and add a new one in the right place.
Showing, listing and grouping
Under Options > Waypoints, toggle the switch on to show all your waypoints on the map. View all waypoints lists them, with search by name and filtering by type — tap SHOW on any of them to zoom the map there.
Waypoints can be organised into groups from the edit details page, and browsed under View Waypoint Groups. To delete a group, long-press it and select Delete — this removes the group only. The waypoints in it are kept, just ungrouped; delete those individually first if you want them gone too.
Importing waypoints
Got a set of waypoints from another hiker or a website? Use Import GPX Waypoints, choose the file, and they’ll be added to your account.
Waypoints on the website
Yes — on any map at hiiker.app, click Options > Waypoints to add one or view your list. Waypoints sync both ways, so anything you add in the app appears on the website and vice versa, as long as you’re signed into the same account. See Waypoints on the HiiKER website.
