HiiKER has two separate 3D features, and they’re easy to mix up. 3D maps mode tilts the map you’re already looking at. View in 3D opens a flyover of one particular peak. Both are free.
3D maps mode
This turns the whole map three-dimensional so you can read the terrain — spot the major ascents, descents and landmarks before you set off.
Turning it on
- On any map page, tap the Maps button.
- Find the 3D Mode toggle at the bottom of the window and switch it on.
- The map tilts straight away. It stays on as you browse, and works with every map style — including the PRO+ collections.
Moving around in 3D
- Pan — drag with one finger.
- Tilt — put two fingers on the screen and move them up or down together.
- Rotate — twist with two fingers.
- Zoom — pinch in or out.
💡 If the hills look too flat or too dramatic, adjust 3D Elevation Exaggeration — see What is Elevation Exaggeration?
On the HiiKER website, the same toggle is in the Maps window, and there’s a 3D button in the map controls.
View in 3D — a flyover of a single peak
Tap a peak on the map to open its detail sheet, then tap View in 3D. The peak opens in a slowly rotating flyover so you can see its shape and the ground around it from every side.
The button only appears on peaks — you won’t see it on a car park, a pub or a shelter. As well as the POI sheet, you’ll find it on a peak’s waypoint and hike-highlight sheets, in your peak lists, and on hike and recording overview pages. It’s also on the HiiKER website, on the same peak detail dialog.
Controlling the flyover
- Pause rotation / Play rotation — stop the spin to look at one aspect.
- Drag to rotate — turn the peak by hand.
- Flyover settings — adjust Speed, Pitch, Zoom and Terrain, with a Reset to put them back.
- You can change the map style behind the flyover from the Maps button. Overlays and POIs aren’t offered here — this screen only draws the terrain.
Which one do I want?
- “I want to see the shape of the land along my route” — 3D maps mode.
- “I want a proper look at that one summit” — View in 3D from the peak’s sheet.
- “What is that mountain over there?” — that’s Peak Viewer (PRO+), which names the summits on your horizon through your camera.
- “I want a video of my route to share” — that’s a 3D flyover video, made on the website.
