Why won’t my GPX file open?
If your GPX file won’t open it may be because of the following reasons!
- File doesn’t have .gpx extension – The file needs to end in .gpx (e.g., route.gpx not route.txt). Some apps or downloads might save it with the wrong extension.
- File is corrupted or incomplete – If the download was interrupted or the file wasn’t saved properly, it may be missing essential data that makes it readable.
- Invalid GPX format – The file might have errors in its structure or contain data that doesn’t follow standard GPX formatting, which can happen when it’s been manually edited or exported from certain tools.
- File is too large – Very large GPX files with thousands of trackpoints or waypoints might exceed size limits or take too long to process.
- Wrong file type – The file might actually be a different format (like KML, KMZ, or FIT) that just needs to be converted to GPX first.
