You can create printable PDF maps in HiiKER as a physical backup for your hikes — a real map that never runs out of battery. Printing is part of PRO+.

Print an area of the map

1. Open the Map tab and tap Options.
2. Under Tools, tap Print Map. (You can also tap Maps > More > Print a map.)
3. Move and zoom the map until the dashed rectangle covers the area you want — the Print area label at the top of the screen tells you that’s the sheet.
4. Tap or drag up the Print this map panel to give the map a title and choose the page size and scale (see Print settings).
5. Tap Print this sheet.

The print queue opens and your map starts rendering. When it’s ready, tap it to open the PDF, then share it, save it or send it to a printer.

Print a hike map

1. Open the hike you want to print — a HiiKER hike, one of your planned hikes or one of your recordings.
2. Tap More, then Print map (Print Map on Android).
3. Under What to print, choose how the sheets are laid out (see below).
4. Change the page, scale or grid if you like, then tap the button at the bottom of the panel — Print all N days, Print the whole route or Print this sheet, depending on what you chose.

What to print

• Every day (N) — one sheet per day, each framed on that day’s walk. Only offered for multi-day hikes.
• Whole route — the full walk, on as few sheets as it takes. HiiKER picks the scale for you, so the panel shows Scale to fit instead of a scale picker.
• This map area — frame a single sheet yourself on the map, at the scale you choose.

The first option is selected for you, so a multi-day hike starts on Every day. Print maps started from the Map tab have no route to fit, so they always print the map area you frame.

Printing several sheets as one PDF

When you’re framing the map yourself, you can collect several sheets into one PDF — handy for a long walk at 1:25k:

1. Frame the first sheet and tap Add another sheet at this spot.
2. Move the rectangle to the next area and tap it again. The button counts the sheets you’ve collected.
3. When you have them all, tap Print N sheets as one PDF.

Print settings

Tap or drag up the Print this map panel on the print screen to change how the sheet is laid out. The line under the title sums up your current choices.

• Title — printed on the sheet. When you print a hike or a recording, it’s filled in with its name; otherwise type one into Enter map title.
• Page — A5, A4, A3 or Letter, in Portrait or Landscape. A4 portrait is the default. Changing the page reshapes the rectangle on the map.
• Scale — 1:10k, 1:25k, 1:50k, 1:100k or 1:250k, with 1:25k as the default. The panel shows how much ground the sheet covers. Sheets are rendered at 300 DPI.

Scale controls how much ground fits on the page — it is not the same thing as which mapping is drawn. A 1:50k sheet printed from National+ is not necessarily the 1:50,000 map series.

Open Advanced settings for the rest:

• Grid & projection — Web Mercator (north up) (the default, latitude and longitude), British National Grid (OS), Irish Grid, New Zealand Map Grid or UTM (worldwide), where the zone is worked out from where the sheet is.
• On every sheet — Grid & edge coordinates, Magnetic declination, Scale bar, Legend and Sunrise & sunset. All five are on by default.

Choosing a national grid rotates the sheet to grid north, so the kilometre lattice sits square to the paper the way it does on a printed OS sheet. The projections use the same definitions as the app’s own grid reference readout, so the two can’t disagree. The projected grids are only offered where they’re valid — the British National Grid won’t be an option for a walk in the Alps.

Turning on the grid adds a margin of coordinates around the map, so the map itself is slightly smaller. Sunrise and sunset times need a date: set Date of the hike, or the times won’t print.

Finding your print maps

Every print map you make is saved to your account. Find them any time under Home > My Print Maps, or tap the list button at the top right of the print screen — it shows a count while sheets are still rendering. Tap a finished map to open the PDF.

Top tip: your print maps sync across the app and the website, so you can build a sheet on your phone and print it from a computer later.

Which maps can I print?

You can print: Standard, Satellite, National+, Historical+ and Parks.

You cannot print: Hiking+ and Lidar. Both are restricted by our licensing agreements.

The restriction on Hiking+ covers the whole collection — that includes Harvey Maps and EastWest Mapping. In the print map style picker these appear dimmed rather than hidden; tapping one shows a message explaining it can’t be printed. That’s expected behaviour, not a bug.

The same restriction applies on the HiiKER website.

Options only on the website

A few print options are on hiiker.app/print-maps but not yet in the app:

• An elevation profile on the sheet
• A QR code linking back to the hike
• An information sheet printed alongside the map
