You can choose the grid reference or coordinate system HiiKER uses to show exact locations on the map. There are five options:
- World Geodetic System (Lat, Long) — decimal latitude and longitude, such as 53.0681 -4.0769. This is the default.
- Latitude/Longitude (DMS) — degrees, minutes and seconds, such as 53°04’05″N 4°04’34″W.
- Great Britain Grid Reference — Ordnance Survey® grid references, such as NN 16604 71259.
- Irish Grid Reference — such as V 80317 84437.
- New Zealand Grid Reference — New Zealand Map Grid (NZMG) eastings and northings, such as 2279285 5730778.

Change your coordinate system
- On any map, tap the settings icon at the right-hand end of the map information bar.
- Scroll to Map coordinate system (Map Coordinate System on Android).
- Tap the drop-down and choose your preference. It’s saved straight away.
On iPhone you’ll also find it at Home > settings > App Settings > Customize > Coordinate Reference System (Grid Ref, etc..).
Coordinate systems in Go to location
Options > Go to location has its own coordinate drop-down — Coordinate Reference System on iPhone, Map Projection on Android. It starts on your preferred system, but you can switch it for a one-off search, which is handy when someone sends you a position in a different format. The example under the text box shows the format each option expects.

Good to know
- Your coordinates appear in the map information bar when one of its slots is set to Coordinates (slot 1, by default).
- National grids only cover their own country. Switch back to latitude and longitude when you hike elsewhere.

Hello, is there any way to make the grid lines darker?
Hey Alan, Unfortunately not. They are built into the maps. The cartographers themselves have styled it that way.
